Cst. Brett Ryan began playing hockey at the age of three, and from the moment his skates hit the ice, the game became a lifelong passion. He played throughout his childhood and teenage years, participating in minor hockey, summer leagues, and eventually advancing to AAA hockey at an early age. Hockey wasn't just a sport for Brett—it was part of who he was.
As he grew older, Brett continued to give back to the game he loved by becoming a dedicated official. Whether playing or officiating, he always brought integrity, respect, and enthusiasm to the rink. He was deeply involved in the hockey community, where his positive spirit and sense of service left a lasting impact on everyone he met.
This tournament s held in Brett’s honour—to celebrate his passion for hockey, his commitment to service, and the community he loved so deeply. Through this event, we continue his legacy by bringing first responders together, supporting their well-being, and creating lasting connections both on and off the ice.
The First Responders 1st Annual Hockey Tournament was created to bring together members of the emergency services community in an atmosphere of camaraderie, competition, and support. Through the fast-paced game of hockey, we aim to foster teamwork and unity among first responders, offering a space where they can connect, share experiences, and enjoy the benefits of physical activity and mental recharge.
First responders are often the first to arrive in times of crisis, carrying the weight of their responsibilities long after the emergency ends. This tournament serves not only as a sporting event, but also as a gesture of recognition and appreciation for the sacrifices they make every day.
In addition to strengthening community bonds, the tournament also creates a platform for education and dialogue around mental health. By reducing stigma and encouraging conversation in a shared, supportive setting, we hope to help those who serve feel seen, valued, and empowered to care for their own well-being.
More event and registration details will be available once ice time is confirmed.
